When I was a kid, my dad bought a new Ford Country Squire station wagon. If I remember correctly it had a lot of bells and whistles. It also had a huge glove compartment. I joked with my friends that there was a turntable in there so we’d be able to jam to some Led Zeppelin. This of course wasn’t true but at the time I didn’t know I was such a visionary.
Check out the new Lexus IS Sedan, it has a turntable in the glove compartment!
As it turns out, I wasn’t the first to think of this. Back in the day, even before tape decks, some high-end car had record players in them. Of course playing them while driving wasn’t very effective and not healthy for the vinyl either.
The New Lexus IS Sedan
Fast forward to today and Lexus USA put a fully-functional record player in its new IS sedan. Called the ‘Wax Edition’ IS, owners can listen to their vinyl on the go.
So what keeps it from skipping? Well first of all, the new IS has an incredibly smooth ride but in addition there is a complex suspension system built around the record player. Also, the needle has its own anti-gravity tensioner.
This system is stowed in the glove compartment (box) and actually ejects when its time to flip the record.
At this time, this new invention won’t actually be in any regular Lexus vehicles but it’s definitely a cool idea. We’ll see what happens.
